Spring Concert Saturday 23 March 2013
St Mary’s Church, 7.30pm Rimsky-Korsakov Russian Easter Overture Kodaly Variations on a Hungarian Folk Song Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 Our season begins with a Russian- themed concert on Saturday 23rd March. The works in the programme are all based on strongly patriotic themes. Rimsky Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture is a concert overture based on Russian liturgical themes and dedicated to the Russian composers Borodin and Mussorgsky. Kodaly’s “Peacock” variations are a set of orchestral variations based on a Hungarian theme. Kodaly collected his themes by visiting and recording original folk tunes form Hungarian villages. He then transformed them into unique and technically challenging orchestral works. The concert concludes with Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony. This is a work based in the Russian tradition of beautiful flowing melody and development of melodic motif with his incredible use of orchestral colour. This symphony challenges all human emotion from the profoundly deep and reflective to the heights of exhilaration. |
